Mardle challenges Dartford

DARTS fans are being given the chance to take on Wayne "Hawaii 501" Mardle at the oche in Dartford next week.

Mardle, who knocked Phil Taylor out in the quarter-final stage of last year's PDC world championships, will go head-to-head with 16 challengers drawn from a hat at the Acacia Halls on September 5.

As well as taking on the audience, Mardle will also conduct a question and answer session and auction a signed Hawaiian shirt.

Acacia Halls will be throwing open their doors at 7pm for the event, which starts at 8pm, and a disco will follow once the darting action ends.

Tickets cost £10.50 and are available in advance from the venue in High Street, Dartford, or by calling 01322 343470

Anderson crowned League of Legends champion

Bob Anderson justified his billing as favourite throughout the Betfred.com League of Legends by capturing the inaugural title with a 10-4 final victory over Keith Deller.

The 60-year-old from Clevedon produced a sparkling display at the Circus Tavern that was reminiscent of the years when he reached two World Championship semi-finals at the same venue.

Deller was back on the stage only 30 minutes after beating Cliff Lazarenko to reach the £15,000 showdown and could not reproduce the fine form he had shown in that success.

It was the Limestone Cowboy who flew out of the blocks and into a 4-0 lead thanks to crisp finishing on several doubles.

And that margin was never bridged by Del Boy, who simply could not live with his opponent and had to settle for the £13,000 runner's up cheque.

'My mindset was to get in there and win and I'm happy to say I did that,' said 1988 world champion Anderson.

'I'm very proud to be the inaugural Betfred.com League of Legends champion.

'I was particularly delighted with the way I played in the semi-final to get past Peter Evison. He is a tough nut to crack.

'Keith had just had a tough game against Cliff and I'd had a rest so maybe that explains why I started as well as I did

'But to play against these guys on a regular basis again has been fantastic. It's really woken me up and told me I can still do it and be up there and compete.

'At the age of nearly 61 I'm very pleased to be in the League of Legends and I'm looking forward to next year.'

Deller acknowledged he had simply been outplayed by a better opponent on the night.

'In the first six legs everything went to plan for Bob,' said the 48-year-old from Suffolk. 'That was the form of someone who could be ranked in the top 16 in the world. His first six legs were absolutely fantastic.

'He admitted to me afterwards that he had hit absolutely everything and that's what you want to do in a final.

'I wasn't expecting him to play as well as that but he is a great champion and at the end of the day the best player won it. I can't argue with that.

'I think all eight players have done really well in the competition and I'd like to say a very big thank you to Betfred because without them the League of Legends wouldn't have happened.'

As the Co-Op dropped out of division four all points from the second half of the league have been removed, only their first half games count.

Please note that super league starts on the 3rd September with the first game away to Quest. (Ashford).
If you would like to play for Sheppey please let me or Chris Collins know as soon as possible.  We will be leaving from The Queens at 7.15pm sharp.  If you want to come and will be a little later let Chris know.

Hi All, this is the proposed winter treble board league (in excel format).  It may not be the final list as there are a question on some players and what team they are playing for.   Please let me know NOW if you have a problem with it.

THE A.G.M.

It was decided at the A.G.M. the final placings of teams in each division would be down to myself and John due to strong teams going in the fourth division.

It was also decided that any team not turning up without giving twenty four hours notice will forfeit £10.00 towards sandwhiches instead of £5.00.  This will be paid by John on recieving a letter or email of the offending team by the home team.  The £10.00 will be claimed back by John from the offending team.

Johns Email address is: rjpjrf@yahoo.co.uk

Some teams seem to be getting behind with games can you let me know what is happening.

The pro player for presentation night is Steve Maish.  The Sheppey Classic Winner.

Attention of all dart teams.

A complaint has been received by the league about a couple of dart players who helped themselves to drinks from optics whilst the bar was unattended.   You are bringing the game into disrepute and it is bad for the league.

The players concerned have been banned from the pub in question which could make it very difficult next time their team is playing in that pub as it means their team will be playing short.

Also please return all Summer trophy's at the AGM Thursday.

SHEPPEY DARTS CLASSIC 2008

Sheppey Classic Photo Album 2008  HERE

Saturday 31st May

Yet another Triumph for Sheppey Darts as Classic Goes with a Bang!!

The best ever Classic event brought forth hosts of people all willing to pick up extra cash .....

The smoothly run competition was rated highly by players and spectators alike - next year will see even more dartboards available to shorten the length of waiting time for contestants.   The smoking ban contributed towards players being unable to be found for their next games - next year all players will be required to listen out for their names being called and to make themselves available straight way.

The Youth event saw twenty four youngsters taking part and each eager to take the title.  Ironically the final was contested by two brothers, Steve and George Turner from Ipswich – both had excellent games on stage but it was the elder brother, Steve, who eventually powered his way through for the Championship position with a 24.43 average, his brother achieving a respectable 18.81 average.   .  Winner:  Trophy plus £50.  Runner-Up £25.

The final of the Ladies Singles event was between Norma Self (Ex-Essex County but now living in Sussex) and Kim Ross (Ex-Sheppey player now living in Spain).   Good high scoring gave Norma the edge and she defeated her opponent 3-1 with a 20.16 average.  Kim’s average was 16.14. Norma’s winning legs were taken in 24, 20 and 22 darts.   Winner :  Trophy plus £100 – Runner-Up £50.

Excellent play from all players in the Mens Pairs event gave good entertainment value.

Sixty four pairs took part in the event.    There were Sheppey players taking part in the semi-finals :  Matt Robson who played with Andy Belton (a pro player from Norfolk) and Fred Burton who played with another Sheppey player Steve Sidders.

Robson and Belton went out 4-0 to Terry Rose and Steve Maish (both from Essex ) who played the victors from the Burton and Sidders game Darryl Jaeger and Conan Whitehead from Medway who won 4-2.

The final was a great event with Jaeger and Whitehead beating Rose and Maish in the final 5 – 2 to take the £300.00 First prize  -  Runners-up received £150.00. The semi-finalists received £75.00.

 Sunday 1st June

Sunday was the main event  - with one hundred and eighty seven entries it proved to be the biggest classic yet and it was going to be a long day..

The games eventually culminated with semi-finals taking place between four players named Steve!!  Steve Hardy (Essex) and Steve Douglas (Kent).    A high class game with Hardy winning 5-0 with an amazing 31.70 average (Steve Douglas securing an  average of  27.39).

The second semi-final was between Steve Musson (Hampshire) and Steve Maish (Essex).   Steve Maish being the eventual 5-2 winner with a  28.48 average and Musson claiming a 27.77 av.

So two Essex players in the final:   What a final this turned out to be – Maish  seemed to set his sights on the championship straight away and despite excellent responses from Steve Hardy took the game 6-0 in winning legs of 14, 15, 17, 18, 16 with the final leg being taken in 12 darts on a 124 outshot for a 32.67 average!   Steve Hardy’s average was 29.50.

Furthest Sheppey players who reached the last 32 were Geoff Harkup, Charlie Day and Paul Gynne.  Twice winner Andy Belton went out to Medway’s Steve Day who lost in the next round to Nick Turner from London.

The prize fund was: Winner £2000.00

                                    Runner up: £1000.00

                                    Losing Semi finalist, 2 x £500.00

                                    Quarter Finals: 4 x £125

                                    Last 16:  8 x £70.00

SHEPPEY SUPER LEAGUE REPORT

send in pics of your own team for inclusion on this website.

I got a call tonight (Thursday) from the Nore about teams not turning up to play them because they are too good for the third division.  I understand a team is trying to get a petition up to have them removed from that division.

This is supposed to be a friendly darts league and it is no fault of the Nore that they are in division three.

John and I used to have the discretion as to what division a new team went into but that was taken away from us at the A.G.M. and if you were there you would know this.  I agree the Nore should probably be in division one or two but it is out of my hands and no matter how many petitions are got up it cannot be altered untill the next AGM.  So get on and play the game and enjoy playing the quality of players the Nore has.

Latest results are online.  No write-up as the super league has finished but from time to time I will keep you up to date on how the teams are playing and how the classic is going.

Will you all please note as I have been telling you for the last few weeks we are still getting late sheets and will put up with it no longer it makes things very difficult for me.  Some teams are still not putting their team names on the result sheets if this happens again I will put them straight in the bin.

Late sheets this week and two points deducted from the home team in accordance with the rules:
R.O.A.B. Club 'A',  Red Lion 'B',  Minster Club 'A' , British Queen.

Triples Teams for May HERE

Super League has now finished and Sheppey had their worst season ever finishing 15th out of sixteen but we are more optimistic for next season.

Last Thursday saw the Joe Bussandra memorial being played at the Bond Club with Steve Sidders and Richard Hope going through to the final later in the season.

We are getting a lot of late and incorrectly filled in sheets these will not be tolerated any more as it takes me too long to sort them out.  Offending teams will now lose points.  Some team registration forms have also not been returned yet so these are now urgent.

The Sheppey classic entries are now coming in well with one from Spain, once again the Sheppey players are slow to respond as we only have four entries from local players.  Please enter now!

Last week's results are online - you will see there are several teams that I have not received results from.  Three late results came in yesterday and two today the rest are missing.

I am away for a week so no report next week and when I return any late results, the home team will lose points.

No Exceptions!!!.

Tony

Last week Sheppey were home to Erith Trades and as we beat them at their venue we had high hopes of beating them again at home.

First to play was Charlie Day who got us off to a good start winning 3-0 with 9 tons and a 21.47 average, next to play was Mathew Gilson who lost 1-3 with 2 tons and a 19.94 average.

Our third player John Milner also lost 1-3 with 6 tons and a 21.40 average.  Dave Winter faired little better losing 1-3 with3 tons and a 17.26 average, we thought Ricky O’Brien was on to a winner but missed his doubles to lose 2-3 with 7 tons and a 20.71 average.  Sheppey were now 4-1 down and needed to sort themselves out or lose a match they expected to win.  Pat Scurfield won 3-0 with 7 tons and a 22.10 average followed by Chris Collins who won 3-1 with 3 tons and a 19.27 average.  Tony Cox needed to win to keep their chances alive but he had so many darts bounce out of the board he lost 1-3 with 6 tons and only a 16.74 average.  Lee Steele lost the last game 0-3 with 4 tons and a 19.68 average.

Once again a disappointing evening for Sheppey losing 6-3 but if you do not take advantage of chances you are given you cannot expect to win.  Sheppey hit a total of 47 tons and a team average of 19.84.

On Thursday evening Bill and Jan Ratcliffe organised a darts competition at the Royal Hotel in aid of MacMillen Nurses.  The landlord Dave Ingram put up £175.00 for a prize fund, John Fraser donated £100.00 and Charlie Day added £50.00, the evening was run by the Sheppey Darts League.

Thirty six dart players turned up to take part and a great evening was had by all, Steve Sidders won the first prize of £100.00 beating Charlie Day in the final, Day collected £50.00 for his trouble.  Jan Sidders won the £25.00 for the furthest lady and all the winners donated their prize money back to Macmillen Nurses.

Just over £620.00 pound was raised so a collection was sent around and it was made up to £700.00 which will be presented to a representative of Macmillen Nurses next Thursday evening at the league’s presentation night being held at Minster Working Men’s Club.  Please be early for this as we have pro player Bob Anderson down to demonstrate his skills by playing our league winners.

A full roundup of the presentation and winners will be in next weeks report along with photographs.
